The Top 50 Business Leaders of New York for 2022

U.S. Business Report is pleased to announce The Top 50 Business Leaders of New York for 2022. This state, just shy of 55,000 square miles and about 1% of the country’s land mass, has an economy nearly the same size as Canada as a whole. With that comes a slew of unique challenges that are not unknown to this year’s awardees. These individuals face adversity year after year but remain steadfast to the industries they serve. They are successful leaders and problem solvers, creative in their approach to leadership and their discipline.

Among this year’s awardees is Paul Segal, Chief Executive Officer of LS Power, who oversees one of the largest independent power and transmission developers in the United States; Harry Kargman, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Kargo, who transformed the company from a small start-up into one of the advertising industry’s fastest growing and most innovative technology companies; and Marty Burger, Chief Executive Officer of Silverstein Properties, who leads the company’s acquisitions and development efforts across the country and abroad.

1. Jason Gorevic
CEO, Teladoc Health

Jason Gorevic is the Chief Executive Officer and member of the board of directors for Teladoc Health. He is passionate about transforming how healthcare is accessed, experienced, and delivered around the world.  Over the past decade, the company has become the world leader in virtual care, directly delivering millions of medical visits across 175 countries each year and enabling millions of patient and provider interactions for thousands of hospitals, health systems and physician practices globally. Gorevic and his teams are working to create a new category in the delivery and enablement of whole person care.

Previously, Gorevic was a president and chief marketing and product officer for WellPoint and before that, a chief sales and marketing officer with Empire BlueCross BlueShield. Earlier in his career he worked with Oxford Health Plans as a director of service strategy. Gorevic graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with an undergraduate degree in international relations.

 

3. Emily Weiss
Founder & Executive Chairwomen, Glossier

Emily Weiss is the Founder and Executive Chairwoman of Glossier Inc, the digital-first beauty company that’s changing how the world sees beauty. Weiss works closely with the CEO and board on stewarding Glossier into the future, supporting the brilliant leaders of creative, brand, product, and retail, as they work toward building an iconic, 100-year-old brand. Founded in 2014, Glossier is the pioneer of a “skin first, makeup second” beauty philosophy that celebrates individual freedom and choice. Glossier’s modern essentials spanning skincare, makeup, body, and fragrance are available in seven countries through Glossier.com, as well as freestanding retail stores across the U.S. and U.K.

Prior to starting Glossier, Weiss founded the beauty blog Into The Gloss. She has been included in TIME's 100 Next, Vanity Fair’s New Establishment, Fortune’s 40 Under 40 and Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business. Weiss graduated from New York University with a degree in studio art.

 

5. Paul Segal
CEO, LS Power

Paul Segal is the Chief Executive Officer of LS Power and has served in that capacity since 2011. Segal is also a member of LS Power’s Management Committee, overseeing one of the largest independent power and transmission developers in the United States. Additionally, the Firm launched LS Power Equity Advisors in 2005, through which it has raised $6.36 billion in committed capital for its power and energy infrastructure-focused private equity investment strategy.

Prior to his appointment as CEO, Segal oversaw LS Power’s asset management and renewables development activities. In 2002, Segal founded Luminus Management, a hedge fund which invested across the capital structure of publicly traded power, energy, utility, and related companies, for which he was a president and portfolio manager until 2011. Segal began his career at Smith Barney as a generalist in the Mergers and Acquisitions Investment Banking group. Segal graduated from the Rutgers College of Engineering with an undergraduate degree in biochemical engineering.

 

6. Harry Kargman
Founder & CEO, Kargo

Harry Kargman is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Kargo, the leading mobile brand advertising marketplace. Kargman is the chief architect of Kargo’s strategy and culture. Under his leadership over the last thirteen years, Kargman has transformed Kargo from a small start-up into one of the advertising industry’s fastest- growing and most innovative technology companies. Today, Kargo works with the world’s most prestigious brands to deliver mobile advertising that goes beyond the banner. Their technology can be found on more than 300 of the largest media company properties, from The New York Times to Hearst, NBC to Viacom, Scripps to Turner, CNN to Fox, Time, Inc. to Vice and many more, and its technology powers the campaigns of more than 200 of the most influential consumer brands.

Kargman holds over fifty patents related to Kargo’s technology and continues to push the company to innovate. Kargo has pioneered unique media formats and data across publishers to help serve the right advertising and creative formats to the right user. Kargo has been recognized with some of the highest honors in the digital advertising industry, including more than 7 Mobi and OMMA awards for creative innovation. Kargman is a frequent speaker and panelist at many advertising and technology conferences, and has been featured in The New York Times, The Today Show, AdAge, Bloomberg, Fox Business, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, and dozens of other media outlets. Kargman graduated with honors from Harvard College, where he is now an advisor to young entrepreneurs through the Harvard Innovation Lab.

9. Manipal Dhariwal
Co-Founder & CEO, Netsmartz

Manipal Dhariwal began his professional career 23 years ago. Today, he is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Netsmartz. Netsmartz strives to be a leader in the global marketplace for IT solutions in the areas of cloud and infrastructure services, eLearning courseware, enterprise mobility, software development, digital marketing, and mobile app marketing. Dhariwal earned an undergraduate degree in computer engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology.

 

11. Tomer Tagrin
CEO & Co-Founder, Yotpo

Tomer Tagrin is the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Yotpo. They integrate with the tools online businesses use every day, including Google, Instagram, top eCommerce platforms, and the rest of the marketing technology stack. Tagrin has 18 years of experience. He began his career in 2004.

Before joining Yotpo, Tagrin was a contributor at The Next Web and before that a chip design developer at Intel. Earlier in his career he worked with the Israel Defense Force as a team leader specialized in training the next generation of Artillery commanders. Tagrin earned an undergraduate degree in software engineering from Tel Aviv University.

 

15. Joseph Romano
Partner & President, JRM Construction Management

Joseph Romano is a Partner and President of JRM Construction Management. At JRM, the cornerstones of their business are solid construction and excellence in on-site management. They bring their clients the expertise and full capabilities of a large firm while maintaining a boutique firm approach with top-down involvement. Romano provides overall strategic, operational, and business development leadership by implementing and enforcing the necessary control protocols to ensure smooth daily operations at JRM. Romano has over 20 years of industry experience managing some of the area’s largest and technically complex construction projects.

Romano is heavily involved in all aspects of the construction program overseeing contract administration, cost control, and cash flow analysis. 18. Marty Burger
CEO, Silverstein Properties

Marty Burger began his professional career 33 years ago. Today, he is the Chief Executive Officer of Silverstein Properties. Silverstein Properties is a privately held, full-service real estate development, investment, and management firm. Founded in 1957 by Chairman Larry Silverstein, Silverstein Properties has developed, owned, and managed more than 40 million square feet of office, residential, hotel, retail, and mixed-use properties. Best known for the redevelopment of the World Trade Center, the firm focuses on large-scale, complex development projects that enhance neighborhoods. They own and operate a portfolio of high-quality assets valued at over $10 billion, with nearly 16 million square feet of commercial, residential, and retail space across ten office towers in Manhattan, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles, a 443-unit luxury hotel in Orlando and two luxury rental buildings in Midtown Manhattan with 2,280 units including 500 affordable housing apartments and corporate suites.

Prior to joining Silverstein, Burger was president and CEO of Artisan Real Estate Ventures, a company he founded in 2006. Prior to Artisan, he spent many years at Related and was a vice president at The Blackstone Group. He got his start in 1993 with Goldman Sachs’ Whitehall Real Estate funds. Burger earned an undergraduate degree in finance and accounting from the University of Pennsylvania.

 

21. Kevin Segalla
Founder & CEO, Tilting Point

Kevin Segalla began his professional career 34 years ago. Today, he is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Tilting Point. Tilting Point is a leading, award-winning free-to-play games publisher that empowers independent developers to grow and accelerate. As a partner-first company, they power up existing live games using deep marketing and product expertise, cutting-edge technology and a user acquisition war chest. To achieve success, Tilting Point employs a data-driven approach to user acquisition, while powering up existing live games for independent developers who may become closer partners on a new joint project as their relationship grows.

Segalla first got his start in 1988 as an engineering technician at Washington Independent News. From there, he went on to HBO, before eventually founding the Connecticut Film Center where he served as the CEO, his most recent position prior to founding Tilting Point. Segalla earned an undergraduate degree from Syracuse University.

 

24. Viraj Puri
Co-Founder & CEO, Gotham Greens

Viraj Puri began his professional career 13 years ago. Today, he is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Gotham Greens. Gotham Greens is on a mission to transform the way they approach their food system, putting people and the planet at the forefront. Their sustainable growing practices and high-quality standards let them grow vibrant greens they’re proud to serve year-round. Puri earned an undergraduate degree from Colgate University.

 

26. Marc Koch
President & CEO, Somnia

Marc Koch is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Somnia. Somnia Anesthesia optimizes anesthesia services for healthcare facilities throughout the country by combining clinical excellence with unparalleled management acumen. Owned and operated by anesthesiologists since 1996, Somnia provides a turnkey, solutions-based approach to anesthesia management. With an extensive in-house infrastructure and a single-minded focus on anesthesiology, Somnia builds and manages local anesthesia teams that consistently deliver the highest quality patient care, enhance operating room performance, increase revenues, and achieve full surgeon and patient satisfaction. Koch is a perioperative physician with 25 years of executive level experience.

Before joining Somnia, Koch was a medical director at South Shore Ambulatory Surgery Center and before that a director of the operating room at St. Clare Hospital. Earlier in his career he worked with Yale University School of Medicine as an anesthesiology resident. Koch graduated from Fordham Gabelli School of Business with an MBA, and from Stony Brook University with an undergraduate degree in liberal arts.

27. George Daguillard
President & Founder, Stellae International

George Daguillard began his professional career 35 years ago. Today, he is the President and Founder of Stellae International. Daguillard first got his start in 1987 as an aircraft systems analyst at Pan American Airlines. Daguillard earned an undergraduate degree in negotiation and business management from Harvard Business School.

 

31. Nicholas Haines
CEO, The Bromley Companies

Nicholas Haines is the Chief Executive Officer of The Bromley Companies. He first joined the company in 2006. The Bromley Companies have built a diversified portfolio of real estate across the country. Their senior management team, with collectively over 120 years’ experience at the firm, have successfully collaborated on a broad range of property investments, development, and dispositions. With their sharp focus on developing compelling tenant spaces and highly personalized service, Bromley has developed many loyal relationships with both global Fortune 500 enterprises as well as individual residential tenants.

Previously, Haines was a director of business development at Vaultus Mobile Technologies and before that a private equity associate at Merrill Lynch. Earlier in his career he worked with Brown Brothers Harriman as an analyst. Haines earned an MBA from Stanford University and an undergraduate degree from Duke University.

 

33. Marcy Gilbert
President & CEO, International Digital Centre

Barkan first got his start in 1992 as a software analyst at Robert Nathans Ltd. From there, he went on to CCH, before eventually rising to become a software architect at DoubleClick, his most recent position prior to joining Catchpoint. Barkan graduated from Stony Brook University with a master’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering and from New York University - Polytechnic School of Engineering with an undergraduate degree in electrical and electronics engineering.

 

38. Adam Caslow
Co-CEO & Managing Partner, Acme Smoked Fish

Adam Caslow is the Co-CEO and Managing Partner of Acme Smoked Fish. Acme Smoked Fish Corporation is one of the leading producers and distributors of smoked fish and pickled fish products in the United States. The company was established in Brooklyn in 1954 and continues to be family owned and operated. The skill and experience behind Acme’s products continue to be carried on by the third and fourth generations of the family and by a very passionate team of food professionals. Products are sold throughout the country in retail and institutional form under four major brands, which include Acme, Blue Hill Bay, Ruby Bay, and Great American. Their products are also anonymously served by some of the best restaurants and behind deli counters in select supermarkets, bagel stores, and appetizing stores. Caslow has 16 years of experience. He began his career in 2006.

Caslow earned an undergraduate degree from Cornell University.

 

40. Michael Uccellini
President & CEO, United Group of Companies

Michael Uccellini is the President and Chief Executive Officer of United Group of Companies (UGOC). She first joined the company in 1991. UGOC is celebrating 50 years in business and has gained national recognition for successfully developing, acquiring, managing, and repositioning real estate assets in New York, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, and Texas. With approximately 250 employees company-wide, the award-winning real estate conglomerate has generated more than two billion dollars from projects including student housing communities, independent senior housing, multi-family rental housing, commercial properties and mixed-use developments. Founded in 1972 and based in Troy, NY UGOC is proud to be a Times Union Top Workplaces winner for six consecutive years, and a Top Workplaces USA winner for 2021 and 2022.

Uccellini earned an MBA in management, economics, and mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an undergraduate degree in economics and mathematics from Union College.

 

43. Kori Lee
CEO, Energy Network

Kori Lee is the Chief Executive Officer of Energy Network. He first joined the company in 2010. 45. Dario Wolos
CEO & Founder, Tacombi

Dario Wolos is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Tacombi. Tacombi started in 2006 on the sand-dusted streets of Playa Del Carmen with a converted taco-serving bus and a dream to share Mexico with the world. They opened their first taqueria in a downtown garage in New York in 2010, and also started producing their own authentic, traditional “Vista Hermosa” tortilla products to preserve and share the flavors of Mexico. They have continued to share Mexican taco culture through neighborhood taquerias across New York, Washington DC and Miami and offer its Vista Hermosa products through stores across the country. As Tacombi opens kitchens in new cities, they have committed to grow their nonprofit The Tacombi Foundation and The Tacombi Community Kitchen, which was established to fight food insecurity and provide food relief for those in need.

Wolos earned an undergraduate degree in business and economics from Cornell University.

 

50. Kenneth Bernardo
President and Chief Executive Officer, Bay Crane Companies

Kenneth Bernardo is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Bay Crane Companies. The Bay Crane Companies were founded in 1939 to meet the needs of lifting requirements in New York. With over 80 years of experience, they have grown steadily and have become a leader in the crane rental, specialized transportation, and construction industries throughout the Northeastern United States. Today they are a world class company with a vast fleet of equipment, a superior and attentive staff, and a recognized reputation for excellent service in the industry. They are the leader in crane rental and specialized transportation solutions. Bernardo has 30 years of experience. He began his career in 1992.

Bernardo earned an undergraduate degree in business administration, management, and operations from Villanova University.
